Why are these engines so hard!
So, my first task, I wanted to get some Synty models and put them in a 3rd person Unreal project. Here goes the same problems as before. You would think this would be easy not no no no, must apply some pain and suffering in this learning experience. Again it all comes down to, specific version to match a specific YouTube video to get anywhere and any assets you purchase must also be compatible with everything else. So the first tutorial failed because the models I had were not the right version, the second failed because the video says “open the model and if you don’t see the retarget manager then press the button on the top of the screen to open”. All the other buttons are there except the retarget one. So, is the model not right, the engine version not right, WTF!
I can understand why so many people give up and go back to 2D games.
I have given myself to the end of this week to figure it out and if I am still lost, will go back to square one of choosing an engine. I may search for someone who can walk me through all these (what should be) basics before I decide to start again.
So, while in this frustrated state with Unreal, I went back to Unity 2019 and Game Creator. With Synty characters, it’s as simple as dropping the model onto the player inspector for model and it just works. Maybe I was a bit harsh with Unity.
After spending a few hours with Unity and the Synty model packs, I feel comfortable enough to continue with Unity. I will be following tutorials and courses with Unreal just in case I need to switch engines to complete my game.
Next few tasks I would like to do:
- Make player fight with a sword.
- Allow player to use shield.
- Make player use a bow and arrow. I want the player to pick po
- Add UI with health.
- Add a pause screen.
Then follow with:
- Fight an enemy AI. When enemy AI is killed, I want them to respawn.
- Add some coins for player/AI bots to collect.
Its Thursday and although the day has been busy, I have created a new project with the Synty models and most of the Game Creator modules and examples. I also installed SourceTree to make a local GIT Repo and each tutorial will be committed.
I purchased the Unity asset “Hierarchy Pro 2021” and after import, it crashed. I submitted a support ticket and hope this can be fixed. I am using 2019.4 and the tool states to work with 2019.2 onwards. Fixing was simple with a change in the code for #IF Version….
So a few days later and I am still trying to figure out how to use Game Creator. Examples are few and documentation lacking. In the end I installed Game Kit Creator, another first/Third addon with more features and even has factions to allow you to define teams. It comes with lots of examples and documentation and its overwhelming to a beginner. Talk about from one extreme to another. Where in GC I could quickly create a player with sword and fighting skills, its harder in GTC. The main player in GTC comes with so many options is difficult to find what to disable. If I was working on Jetman Galactic 3 then this addon is perfect! But for what I need in this new game, is problematic. With both GC and GKC I have reached out on Discord/creators of the product to see if anyone would do some paid work just to get me started. Let’s see if anyone wants to help.
I also looked at Game Guru Max and the performance is way off. That engine is going to need some serious optimisation before anyone creates a game for release. While it comes with lots of assets and object behaviour can be changes with LUA scripts, its just too slow and demos are lacking.
Lets see what the next week brings. If I get no response from Discord then I may ditch GC & GKC and look for another solution.
