So another couple of weeks have passed and I have been looking again at Unity Game Creator and Game Kit Controller. For Game Creator I like the way you define the conditions, actions and behaviour trees but getting it to work is another thing. I don’t like the way you search for an action and then the name is different in the action item header. Gets confusing. The best way to define how things work is by using the behaviour module to build trees but for some reason, I can’t get the nodes to highlight when running the scene to see how it works. Having to go back to the discord server every 5 minutes tells me its not a simple system. Things just break and I have no way to know why. Trying to find someone I can pay to build a level so I can better understand how it works came to dead ends so do I really want to punish myself with this system? Game Kit Controller (GKC) has everything including the kitchen sink and you set the game by selecting the many hundreds of check boxes. This is tooooo overloaded with options and does not setup how I expect for example, I tell it to build a character with melee options and it puts the character in the scene loaded with guns on its back. Not quite what I was asking for to build a sword fighting game. The support from the developer is excellent for GKC and he brings new features out each week and gives people who purchased the kit access to his GIT Repo. I explained what I needed for a basic template with an additional feature or two and he is building me a custom level for a small fee. Perfect! GKC does not come with Behaviour trees which is a shame.
I personally think behaviour trees are the way to go when building games if you want to avoid programming. As long as all the conditions and actions are shown in plain English like “SPAWN CHARACTER AT POSITION” instead of “INSTANCIATE GAMEOBECT AT TRANSFORM” then I’ll be ok. When looking at UNREAL BLUEPRINTS and AI, although it can be a little long winded, it makes the process a lot easier than I expected. Do I switch to Unreal? Lets see how my GKC custom template progresses.
